Emily in France
HEY
So I'm still alive.
Quick summary...
Flights were good, slept most of the way, didn't watch the movies. Flight to Philadelphia was good for two reasons: One, it was a tiny plane that fit about 80 people, and we had to walk on the tarmac and go up a little staircase. Two, flying into Philadelphia at night was amazing! It's all just a glittering spread of city and highways and you wonder what exaclty all these people are doing at the same time, and then suddenly the two-dimensional network of lights jutts out at you like huge rocks and you realize that you're flying over the downtown core and that those jagged rocks are skyscrapers.
The flight to Paris was less exciting.
US Airways lost my baggage.
Anyway, stayed in a little town stuck onto Paris called Vincennes for a few days with my former exchange partner, Sophie. It was great to see her again, and she was kind enough to take me around parts of Paris. We went to see the Eiffel Tower light up at midnight on New Year's, and it was actually really anti-climactic. No fireworks except for the little May 24-caliber fireworks shot from the crowd. It was still really pretty.
I got to Aix on the 1st, then checcked into Residence on the 2nd... The residences here are retarded. Retarded like you cant imagine. 2 showers 2 toilets per floor, no toilet paper, no toilet seats even, and no sinks. There is, however, a sink and a bidet in each room. No common areas to eat or meet people, no sink in the kitchen. No garbage can in the kitchen. In fact the kitchen is 4 hot-plates and a microwave. And you know those little fridges that we had in our rooms in first year? Divide that into six compartments and that's what you can rent as a fridge.
There's one internet room with six computers (3 constantly out of order) for the entire residence complex.
Anyway, its cheap and livable, so Ill complain a lot, but know deep down inside it could be worse.
The other exchange students here are great! I was the happiest girl in the world when I finally ran into Rehana. It was a joyful reunion. There's a dude here who looks like Luke Wilson... only he's Argentinian.
Last night went to a bar called the Sunset Cafe which is very much like Zaphod's . Great music, better atmosphere, fantastic drink deals, and it wasnt that busy. I came back and reeked of smoke though. And thats the crappiest part. Oh, and the lack of toilet seats anywhere.
Well, back to class and such.
Oh, and I got my luggage back.
