The man in my life

So I've been meeting up with a young man almost every day for the past two weeks. He's got brown eyes, dirty blonde hair, and is from Colombia. He's funny and intelligent and just adorable.

His head is about a quarter the size of his body.

He's got a wicked Thomas the Tank Engine train set in the basement.

He's 24..........months old.

Since the beginning of July I've been helping look after this rambunctious little two-year-old who's just received a baby sister! It's a non-paying occupation, but it feels rewarding in itself. Small children are absolutely hilarious. They understand more than they let show, and are always testing their limits. This small child is no different, especially since he now has to compete for his parents' attention. The baby is only two weeks old (it's both terrifying and fascinating to hold her... she's soooo tiny!), so is a handful herself for her mother to take care of. So, I'm helping out by taking the little tyke to the park, and playing in the basement, and feeding him lunch and putting him down for a nap... and then I have a nap.

Aside from learning a whole bunch about child-minding and child-rearing, I'm also able to practice my Spanish! The family moved here about a year ago, and although both parents speak English quite well, they are doing their best to help their children learn both English and Spanish. I'm able to talk to the boy in Spanish and he'll often say "yes" or "no" because he's already had a lot of English exposure from Daycare.... He understands both languages, he just has trouble speaking them. But, then again, he's two... that's when they learn to speak. Right now he's just experimenting with the sounds he can make, but is learning to pronounce actual words. It'll be really neat to watch how he develops his language skills. It'll definetly be a challenge for him at the beginning to use both languages, but it will be so rewarding for him if he's able to keep it up.

I feel bad for his mum sometimes, because it's like she's trying to teach Spanish to three children at the same time... the boy, the girl, and me! ...Que?
