The Oshawa-Aix Connection
This is somewhat in response to a comment about the burnt-up car that I saw in Aix.
No, the burnt car doesn't remind me of Oshawa....
...but the fashion sure does.
Man, you take a look at what people in France call fashionable these days, and it's like Oshawa has been in style for the past 20 years.
Tight-ass jeans with knee- or thigh-high leather pointed-toe boots (or as an alternative, COWBOY boots), short leather bomber jackets, metallic bunched-up fabric shoes...and of course, the mullet.
I think when Tiff was here we saw a poster in a hair salon advertising the new Socceur mullet and we had a good laugh about that. It wasn't all that bad of a cut... much like the Beckham faux-hawk, only with a bit more tail... But you see when people actually wear them and, yeah they're everywhere. Some of them are actually done quite well and you know it's funny 'cuz it's a mullet, but then you think "damn, this is Europe, they can actually pull it off" and then you start to reconsider your prejudices against the cut.
But then you run into people who DON'T do the mullet well. There's this similar hairstyle which is a cross between a really wide mowhawk and a mullet and a buzz-cut and when I see it I sometimes want to vom. It's short and wide, buzzed at the sides, and at the back it kinda tapers down into a pointed mullet... Personally I don't find it attractive at all. I prefer the euro-mullet. This includes the femullet too. Some girls really do it well, others not so much. Depends on their style and face-shape and the intensity of the mullet, I guess.
...I could probably pull it off... :P
Then of course there are the full-out Oshawa-style MULLETS. Long, flowing curls at the back, with a square-ish "business" cut at the front. The people who've been growing those puppies are now basking in the glory of being stylish when they know they've had it for years.
Anyway, Canada beware.... If the fashion gods continue the decree that North America should receive European fashion advice within six to eight months of a new trend, the mullet in all its variations is headed your way!
My prediction for Spring/Summer 2007: Return of the Rat-tail! hahaha!
