Shmalentine's Day

This is the first Valentine's Day in the past four years that I haven't had someone to share it with. Though really I didn't do anything special on most of those Valentine's Days. Only once I think. And it was fun! Heart-shaped waffles and "This is Spinal Tap". Rockin'.

Anyway, how am I celebrating my singledom this year? Fuck, a classic Emily meal of microwaved rice and tasteless companion meat. And a salad.
Also on tonight's schedule: an essay.

Am I enjoying myself? HELLS YEAH! Currently I have the house to myself, though both my roommates and their significant others are coming home in a short while. So, before this house becomes a lovey-dovey nest of smooches et cetera, I'm blasting an album that is both a part of my life and appropriate for today's theme.

The album? RED HOT + BLUE: A tribute to Cole Porter.

This album is freaking awesome. I can't remember exactly what year it was introduced to me, but I was definetly young. Maybe kindergarten young. I remember that my parents had taped the music videos off the TV one year, and my mum would sometimes watch it while doing the ironing.

Anyway, here are the songs on it and some commentary/personal tidbits that relate to them.

1. I've Got You Under My Skin - Neneh Cherry (Eagle-Eye Cherry's sister)
Such a cool song. Definetly doesn't sound like the renditions of the epoque in which it was written.
The last three lines:
"Use your mentality, wake up to reality
I've got you deep in the heart of me
Share your love, don't share the needle."

Right on Neneh.

2. In The Still Of The Night - Neville Brothers

3. You Do Something To Me - Sinead O Connor
In this video I remember her head just kinda floating in a sea of black. It was cool!
Sinead O'Connor shaved her head. I shaved my head too! But my head doesn't float.

4. Begin The Beguine - Salif Keita

5. Love For Sale - Fine Young Cannibals
Fine Young Cannibals are hilarious. Definetly a band from my early childhood that I would love to revisit.

6. Well, Did you Evah! - Debbie Harry/Iggy Pop
This video was great because it began with Iggy Pop opening his hand that was full of ants. The song itself scared me because they said "Have you heard? It's in the stars, NEXT JULY WE COLLIDE WITH MARS". I definetly thought we were all going to die.

7. Miss Otis Regrets/Just One Of Those Things - Kirsty Maccoll/The Pogues
I remember feeling sad when I listened to the former of the two songs. It was very much the same feeling that I got when I listened to Bohemian Rhapsody. They're both very narrative and in the literal sense are about someone being put to death because they killed someone else.
My brother and I would dance around when it transitioned into the latter song.

8. Don't Fence Me In - David Byrne
I can play this song on the ukulele!

9. It's All Right With Me - Tom Waits
I hated this song when I was little. Tom Waits kinda grunts throughout the whole thing, and my brother and I would refer to this one as the "Oscar" song (Oscar, as in Oscar the Grouch).
The song describes 3 of my personal relationships out of the past four years. There's something wrong with me.

10. Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Annie Lennox

11. Night And Day - U2

12. I Love Paris - Les Negresses Vertes
Yeah, Paris is pretty cool.

13. So In Love - K.D. Lang

14. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? - The Thompson Twins

15. Too Darn Hot - Erasure
I like this song.
I think that Erasure was the first band I heard being described as "gay".

16. I Get A Kick Out Of You - The Jungle Brothers
Another great hip-hop tune! I think this was my favourite at the time.

17. Down In The Depths - Lisa Stansfield
I considered this a "boring" song until about grade 6 when I discovered what unrequited love was and began to dramaticize all my crushes.

18. From This Moment On - Jimmy Somerville

19. After You - Jody Watley

20. Do I Love You? - Aztec Camera

I didn't have a strong connection to those last three songs... Probably because by then I was tired of the CD or it was past my bedtime or something...

Recently all the music videos were released on DVD, and my brother, the wise and thoughtful chap, got it for my mum for Christmas.

Well, I guess I have to get ready for my hot date! ...with that essay.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Essay for me as well! And another friend of mine too. Cupid probably shot us while we were in class or studying.
